But thanks to my fiery great-grandma from Scotland...
Almost a hundred years ago, there was this horrible beast that filled the Earth called WWI. It was world-wide devastation, and scores of young men lost their lives during the war. During this time lived my two grandfathers-- Bill and Golden. Golden heard about the need for young men, and in 1918 he walked into a recruitment office and started to volunteer. Word quickly spread through their tiny town that Golden had walked into the war office, and down the street marched my tiny, Scottish spitfire Grandma. Golden was 6'3", she was 5". She dragged her boy out of that office so fast by the ear. She gave him an earful about it the whole way home, still dragging him...
That story lived on for decades in that tiny town.
My other Grandpa, Bill, was on a church mission to Australia from 1917-1919. He missed the war, due to preaching the good word down under.
Today my parents were telling me about all the young men they had known who had lost their lives in those wars and subsequent conflicts, and we thought about the fact that both sides of the family had missed WWI. Lucky? Divine Intervention?
Or, perhaps it was a 5" fiery Scot who dragged her son out of an office. That image is priceless in my head. I can picture it...
